Colin Rafferty is the author of Hallow This Ground (Break Away Books/Indiana University Press), a collection of essays on monuments and memorials. He lives in Richmond, Virginia, not too far from the cemetery in which James Monroe is buried, and teaches in Fredericksburg at the University of Mary Washington, just up the road from Monroe's law office. "The Eye of James Monroe (#5)" is one of a series of 46 essays about the presidents; thanks are due to Mark Ehling, Erin Beasley, and Jerod Kearney for their help with this.
